Cherry Creek Trail Improvements at Iliff Avenue

Cherry Creek Trail Improvements at Iliff Avenue

The Cherry Creek Trail improvements project at Iliff Avenue will eliminate the existing clover leaf and the need to ride on a sidewalk along Iliff Avenue, include a new pedestrian bridge south of Iliff across Cherry Creek and adding additional lighting and expanding the width of the underpass for safer travel for both pedestrians and bicyclists along the popular regional trail.

The project is expected to be completed by July 1, 2019.

Arapahoe County Open Space Sales and Use Tax is funding the $1.4 million project.

In 2015, Arapahoe County was successful in obtaining TIP funding from DRCOG for a number of improvements for East Iliff Avenue in unincorporated Arapahoe County.  During the design process, and with additional coordination between Arapahoe County Open Spaces and Arapahoe County Public Works, we determined that four project elements are essential to the success of the overall Iliff widening project that are also eligible for Open Spaces Acquisition and Development funding.  All four projects will enhance the pedestrian and bicycle experience in the area.

  1. Cherry Creek Regional Trail Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge (a new pedestrian bridge will be installed over Cherry Creek that will eliminate the need to use a tight sidewalk on Iliff and pedestrian ramp);
  1. Cherry Creek Regional Trail Improvements Under Iliff Bridge (the existing low and narrow pedestrian bridge under Iliff will be raised and widened and lighting will be installed to improve pedestrian safety and visibility);
  1. Stormwater Drainage Features in the High Line Canal (as part of the larger Iliff widening project, we have identified a unique way to potentially place stormwater in the High Line Canal); and
  1. Multi-use Path Connecting the High Line Canal and Cherry Creek Trails along Iliff (we are proposing to partner with Public Works to create a contiguous, off-street, multi-use path that will safely connect users from one regional trail to the next).
Overall Layout Plan

Trail Closer and Detour Information

The Cherry Creek Trail will be closed from the Wabash Trailhead to Iliff Avenue for trail improvements and the construction of a new bridge over Cherry Creek. A detour will be in place along Wabash and Iliff Avenue. The project is funded by the Arapahoe County Open Space Sales and Use Tax. (see diagram below for project details)

A 0.5 section of the Cherry Creek Trail from the Wabash Trailhead to Iliff Avenue in unincorporated Arapahoe County is closed until the end of June 2019. Users will be detoured as construction crews make safety improvements to the Iliff underpass, and add a new bridge over Cherry Creek.

The project will eliminate the clover leaf and the need to ride on a sidewalk along Iliff Avenue. It will also include adding additional lighting and expanding the width of the underpass for safer travel.

During the construction, trail users traveling north will be detoured onto S. Wabash Street at the Wabash Trailhead and routed to the north side of Iliff Avenue. Trail users should use cation crossing Iliff Avenue, crossing only at the designated crosswalks. Trail users traveling south will be routed east at Cherry Creek South Drive onto Iliff Avenue and then south on Wabash Street. Detour signs will be posted along the route. (see map below)
